WE ARE NOT READY TO GO!

We started the last blog entry by telling you that we have been planning this trip for a while now (that being 6-7 months). The reality is that even though we've been planning this in our heads, we really have no idea what is going to happen when we go there. We have yet no place to stay for the first days and don't know what we will do in the new years besides partying on the beach (HAHA!).

This causes us a "slight" amount of stress.

To relieve this stress we are now going to tell you all the things we have checked off our list since last time we wrote.

Anneli:

I have taken or started taking all my vaccinations (typhoid fever has to be taken 10 days before the trip). I bought the Fjällraven Kajka and I love it! I have a sleeping bag that I'm testing. Probably buying a new one though. I tried to apply for a credit card, but I don't know did I do it the right way, so I have to call my bank tomorrow. Travel insurance stuff I'm going to do when I go home for the holidays. So I'm pretty much ready... right?

Sanni:

Sanni visited Berlin Germany and had the best steak of her life! While being in Berlin she visited a nice doctor who gave her the typhoid fever shot so she wouldn't have to take the lemon-sized pills that are the only option in Finnland. Everything else is under control. She has a credit card, travel insurance, new hiking boots etc. The only thing is that she has forgotten to contact her Brasilian friends. But that's just a small problem...right?

But hey, we both have sub-rented our rooms in Jyväskylä! That's something.
To be honest, we have so much to do and no time at all.

In this entry we were supposed to tell you about our routeplans, but well... we haven't really made any progress in that area. So now we are just posting photos about the stuff we want to see.

Salvador

Araxá, Sanni's home town in Minas Gerais

Foz do Iguaçu

Tango in Argentina

Salt desert in Bolivia

Machu Picchu

Lake Titicaca

The equator in Ecuador

Three more weeks to go, so much stuff to do and people to say goodbye to. Be back soon(ish)!

Checklist

Although we just started writing this blog, we have been planing the trip and getting ready for a while now. Because Sanni has been in Brazil before, she is much more prepared than I am. Luckily I had a boring start of the summer trying to find a job, so I had a lot of time to do some research and get mentally at least half as prepared as Sanni is just by being herself. I even made a nice little goolgedocs with all the vaccinations and basic information about the countries we are heading to. In this blog entry we are going to explain all the things that are already done and the things that should have been done. Simultaneously this serves as a checklist for us, so we will remember to do everything we need to.

Anneli:

Vaccinations and medication:
Yellow fever (keltakuume)
Typhoid fever (lavantauti)
Hep A+B
MMR booster
Malaria prescription (Doxycycline)
  • Everything has been bought and vaccination appointments are scheduled.

Gear checklist:
Backpack
  • Educated advice wanted! Tried Deuter AC 50+10 SL and Fjällraven Kajka 55W. Both good, but loving the Kajka and heard a lot of good things about it too.
Mosquito net
Hiking shoes/good shoes for walking
  • My sister bought me Patagonia shoes that I'm testing right now.
Sleeping bag for tropical climate

Money and safety:
Credit cards
Travel insurance
Sanni:

Vaccinations and medication:
Typhoid fever
Tetanus booster (jäykkäkouristustehoste)
(Yellow fever and Hep AB still effective)
Malaria prescription (Lariam)
  • The medication can cause sleeping problems, nightmares and depression-like symptoms, which means that it has to be tested before leaving. Wouldn't want her to start hallucinating in the middle of the night in the jungle...

Gear checklist:
Backpack (Deuter AC 60+10)
Mosquito net
Hiking shoes/good shoes for walking
  • She's not sure whether sneakers will be secure enough, but on the other hand, will we do that much hiking?
Sleeping bag for tropical climate

Money and safety:
Credit cards
Travel insurance

Visas
A lot of people have reminded us about visas. In our case they are not necessary, because we won't be staying in any country for three months or more.

Route
We have a vague idea about the route - we know where the journey across the continent begins and where it should end (Salvador, Brazil - Bogota, Colombia). What we do know is that we are not going to fly and that 5-star hotels are out of question. We have some must-visit-destinations and know where to stay at, but mainly the trip is still quite unplanned. Here some examples:
  • Salvador. We'll spend the first few days, including new years, in the capital of dance and music. Where will we stay? Can we find somebody, who wants to have two strangers in their house for the New Years, should we start looking for hosteles or will the beach and sandcastles be enough?
  • Paraguay. Even though the country is interesting and different from the other Southern American countries, we don't have too much time to spend. We're planning on pass through the country within a week. How to do that if there are no roads? Luckily for us, the river Paraguay runs across the country. Could we by any chance travel by boat from south to north?
  • Bolivia. The plan is to cross the country by train. It is called Trem de la muerte, Train of Death, Kalman juna. What will happen during the trip? Will we explode because of altitude sickness, will we tumble down into the depths of Bolivian mountainside or will we get killed by angry cocaine dealers?
  • Machu Picchu. Tickets - how, when, where?
  • Means of travelling. Buses, trains and kind drivers - that's what we're counting on. As far as we are concerned, travelling in Brazil is quite simple. What about all the other countries? What will we do if there are no roads?
Next up: route planning and presenting the first version for our great audience. Next entry won't hopefully take this long. Stay tuned!

Escape.

Everybody needs one. That's why we are going on an adventure. We are going to travel through South America next spring. Originally we planned on travelling throug the whole Americas from south to north within six months. At some point we realised, we would never be able to travel so fast and see all the things we wanted to see, and so we decided to stick with the southern regions, leaving out both North and Central America.

Our departure from Finland is on December 29th. We'll fly via Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro all the way to Bahia to celebrate New Years in Salvador. In about two months we are planning on travelling all the way from Salvador to Buenos Aires and visit Uruguay on the way. The remaining time will be spent travelling through Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Ecuador, all the way to Columbia. All of this will happen also way too fast, within four months. We will head home (home?) on April 29th, just in time to arrive in Finland on April 30th to celebrate May Day Eve. Munkit porisemaan, simasuut <3

Who are we?

Sanni is a stunning, spiffingly hilarious and quick-witted young lady. I don't mind spending time in silence and frankly, I like being alone at times. I love christmas, knitting, my friends and family, travelling, reading, winter, music and mud cakes. And dough!

Anneli is a freakingly neurotic individual but at the same time the most amazing human being on Earth. I am in many ways too much, too open and too loud. I love woolen socks, warm wind and pasta. Oh yeah, and pasta!

We got to know each other two and half years ago, when Anneli had just returned from her year (and half) abroad in Konstanz. From further away she confused Sanni with another dear friend of hers, began running towards Sanni realising halfway through, it wasn't her friend - in fact, it was a total stranger. Nevertheless, we hugged to prevent an awkward situation. (Anneli: so I touched Sanni's boobs before I knew her name - love at first touch) (Sanni: it was awkward) We didn't really bond before 2012, when Sanni came back from her year abroad, which she incidentally also spent in Konstanz. After a couple of months we were already planning the trip. 'Nuff said.

Why are we going on this trip?

Sanni: "I need a break." That's the thought I had sometime last autumn, when there seemed to be too much going on, too much to do, too much to stress about. Easiest solution is to travel, I reasoned, as far away as possible. So where to? It was five years ago in the end of my year abroad, when I solemnly swore to my friends and families in Brazil to come and visit them as soon as possible, probably within the next two years. Well, that didn't happen - I had to finish school, I got into university, I moved to Germany etc. About a year ago I decided that I'd finish my bachelor's degree by the end of this year to be able to do whatever I want in the following spring. When I told my friends about my plan, many asked me to squeeze them into my luggage. It was Anneli, who, instead of asking for something, told me that she would be joining me. Said and done. Now I'm seriously in need of a long break, I need to sort out my thoughts and try to make plans for the future. Escaping your problems is always the answer, right?

Anneli: When I heard that Sanni wants to go visit her "family" in Brasil and asked would I want to go with her and travel South and North America, I immediately said of course! Reason number 1, because I had never traveled outside of Europe and reason number 2, because I definitely wouldn't let her go alone and die without my protection. (Maybe I was also a bit jealous that an another friend of mine was just about to go on an around  the world trip.) This all happened last autumn and as the year changed and the new year went on, I found more and more reasons to escape. Since I've moved away from my parents, I haven't been living in one city for more than 1,5 years. I always had the next trip or move thought out. It was time for that again. Also, I was having anxiety about that one thing that every self-respecting student should have when studying in their should-be-the-last-year-of-college -year: What the hell am I doing here and what the hell have I been doing the last 4 years? Yes Sanni, escaping your problems is always the answer!

Why English?

Even though writing in Finnish would be a more natural choice for us, we decided to use English instead, so that our numerous non-Finnish-speaking friends could keep tabs on us. We hope you forgive us our grammatical errors and misspellings.

Welcome aboard!

We'll try to be active bloggers both before and during the trip. A lot has already been planned and done - we'll let you know about those in future entries. After eight months of careful consideration, we finally came up with a satisfying blog name and voilà! here we go.
